Dallas Crushes Caps, 6-1
By Matt Petersen
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Man, the open road is a rough and lonesome void. Sorry to sound like a Chevy Chase movie, but we’re finishing off a tough stretch here and I can attest that the road’s a bruiser. Okay, whatever.

It’s the seventh day of our six game stretch and we’re kind of feeling the hurt after zigzagging through the east coast seemingly nonstop. Our game here in D.C. is our 19th of the trip and we’re over the halfway point, ready to start heading back. We’re starting to long for our daily routine back home, and the guys’ cell phone calls to their girlfriends are growing later by the hour and longer by the minute.

But alas, it’s nice to rest up here in the US Capital after seven long days. Unfortunately, Hurricane East Rutherford followed us from New Jersey and our stay here has been a tad waterlogged. Our hotel was mere minutes away from the Pentagon and we were amazed that the damage from the attack has been fully repaired. Another positive was that the sniper issue has been resolved and the people here can go back to their lives. When the trip began and the crisis was going on, we weren’t in too much of a hurry to get to D.C.

But now we’re here and it’s quite a thrill. Even though we had a lot more on our minds than hockey, we weren’t going to forget the great game that would be going on in the evening between the dreaded Dallas Stars and the Capitals. The MCI Center (or the “phone booth”) is surrounded in its downtown location by huge government buildings, and Jeff remarked that it didn’t really feel like a hockey town at first glimpse. But, hey Jeff, this is a huge hockey town, and with standout goalie Olaf Kolzig and the addition of the Czech superhuman, Jaromir Jagr, the Cap’s seem destined for a Cup in the near future. As one fan here described Kolzig, “he’s a beast.”

Too bad the beast got beat from the opening horn until the end. Beset by lackluster defense and an incredibly good Dallas team, Kolzig was never in the game and the wind officially left the sails when Bill Guerin scored with time expiring for the second intermission. Scott Young had his first two of the season, and Marty Turco may be the answer in goal after the Stars lost the enigmatic, yet effective Ed Belfour in the offseason.

After the game we hung out in the Chinatown neighborhood near where the Phone Booth stands, and ate some chow mien and mongolian beef. As I’ve been saying, we’re getting tired of game grub, the Chinese food tasted good.

The next day we did our best to just chill out see some of the amazing sites. The highlights were Arlington Cemetery, the Capial Building and the Washington Monument. We braved the nasty weather and reveled in getting hockey out of our system for at least a day. Next stop Philly and more rain to trek through...
