BRUINS, FLYERS TIE
By Matt Petersen
PHILADELPHIA -- Our respite is over with for the time being as we head into Philadelphia. After our game here, we’ll get right back into the car and drive 300-plus miles to Raleigh NC. It’s been good to get some rest and eat some healthy food (like veggies) for a change.

We’ve been hearing a lot on this trip that we’d better watch out for the unruly Philadelphia fans, that they’re savages and we’d have an awful time out here. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. Besides braving more nasty rain, we had nothing but great times in our half day stay here. Too bad we couldn’t stay longer.

We got in and headed straight downtown where we wanted to check out Independence Hall. We took the tour, saw the Liberty Bell and tried to locate an umbrella because we were tired of getting dumped on. After our short tour of downtown Philly, we headed to the First Union Center for the game, and even though the weather conditions couldn’t have been worse, we had one of the best shoots on our Eastcoast swing.

We found some shelter by the Arena and talked to some fans that could have talked hockey all night. They’re super knowledgeable of their sports out here, and we practically had to beat them away to get into the game on time. The Arena is a good hockey barn, a lot nicer than I expected. They’re about to get nicer for teams in general as a new stadium is close to being ready right across the way from the oft criticized Veterans Stadium. Things are looking up out here I think.

In town was the Boston Bruins who we had seen three times prior. We’ve been pretty outspoken with how much we’ve liked this team, and they put on another good show on this night. Even though Boston may have let two points slip away, they dominated often with the powerful Thornton line. Rolston scored a goal for Boston, and P.J. Axelsson was his usual feisty self.

Down late in the third period with the fans starting to head for the exit’s, John LeClair brought the fans back with the equalizer with only four minutes remaining. Even though the game would end in a tie, we saw another exciting overtime, and goaltender Roman Cechmanek stood on his head to keep his team away from a loss.

After the game, we put our long drive to Carolina temporarily on the back burner so we could find a Cheesesteak. It was dinner time, and the aforementioned “hearty” meals in D.C. were out the door. You don’t stop in Philly and not eat one of those things.

At 11 p.m. with the rain coming down outside harder than we’ve ever seen it, we gulped down a tasty steak at “The Talk of the Town,” a local sandwich joint, and hit the road for the South. There weren’t too many people crazy enough to brave the roads on this night, and at times, we had to slow to around 25 MPH on the freeway because the flooding was so bad. All for the glory of the Guinness World Record I guess...
