It's Hockey Now, Not NASCAR In Carolina
By Matt Petersen
CAROLINA -- Our first glimpse of the new southern fanbase in the NHL and we saw equal parts Hurricane flags to NASCAR flags. After a tight 1-0 game throughout, the ‘Cane tied the game in the third with a goal from (old guy, can’t think of name). Good game, awesome overtime tapped by Tampa winger from streaking from weak side for game winner.

We got into Carolina without a hitch at around 6 am, and pulled into our hotel room across the street from where the Hurricane’s play as the sun was coming up. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, and we were glad because we had grown a little tired of the constant downpour.

We rolled into Carolina around 5:30 a.m. as the sun was just starting to come up, and checked into our hotel room to get a few hours of shut eye. We were all a little frightened whether or not our van was going to get swept out to sea from the rains that hit us like a load of freakin bricks on the way down.

We hit the sack for what seemed like 10 minutes before we shuffled half asleep over to see the ‘Canes take on the impressive Tampa Bay Lightning who started off the season rattling off seven straight wins. What resulted was a really good game between two up and coming teams. Sorry Canada, but this could be your Eastern Conference final.

Alright, let’s not go that far, but these were two of the hungriest looking teams we’ve seen so far. No Sami Kapanen in the lineup for the ‘Canes, but leave it to the salty dog Ron Francis to mark the lone goal of the game for Carolina. Ronnie can still play, and they love the guy here.

They love hockey here. A couple guys told us they were missing a beloved NASCAR race for the game. Devotion? I think so.
