November 22 2002 Pittsburgh 3, Atlanta 1 By Matt Petersen

ATLANTA -- We’ve driven upwards of 9,000 miles so far
on this little journey, and to keep us occupied, we
packed as many CD’s as possible. Some good music has
been heard on this trip -- Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Built
to Spill, Bruce Springsteen, the Greenhornes, to
namedrop a few -- and we’re starting to listen to most
of it many times over.
Another good one that’s been heard often is the
Creedence Clearwater Revival Greatest Hits. On our 450
mile drive up north from Tampa Bay, we just so
happened to have a little CCR going, and as crazy luck
would have it, the Creedence Clearwater Revisited
would put on a free show for the fans from center ice
after the game. Coincidence? Absolutely.
The Revisited, a group comprised of a couple of
founding members (no Fogerty, but a guy that sounded
pretty much dead on), put on a helluva show for the
folks here in Atlanta, and it was defenitely a unique
twist to our experience here. As for the game, all of
the entertainment was off the ice.
I took off for the restroom with about five minutes to
go in the first period and I noticed that there were
more people out in the concession area than in the
seats. So I wandered around to see what the fuss was
all about. The Phillips Arena sits on the same real
estate as CNN studios, and this being Ted Turner
country, the arena boasts millions of television
screens showing everything from up to the minute news,
to the cartoon network, to TNT. I munched on the best
game grub yet -- a bunch of buffalo wings for six
bucks. To my right I watched a couple of kids playing
video basketball on a 100-inch monitor. Hey kids,
Mario Lemieux’s on the ice, the Michael Jordan of
hockey.
Oh well, Lemieux only had two assists on the night
adding to his league leading point total of 36, and he
looked rather unenthused on the night. We thought
Atlanta played pretty well though. Once again we were
pleased with the play of Dany Heatley and Ilya
Kovalchuk who both figured in to the only goal of the
game for the Thrashers. Their forwards are good, but
they need some help on defense.
The fans here maybe know that, that’s why they were
hanging out in the concession area. Or maybe they were
just waiting for CCR to go on. In the south, hockey
will take a backseat to a lot of things until a
champion is born. Even washed up rock bands. Next stop
St. Louie, where the Shark would be a bite’n...
