November 29, 2002 Stars Have the Digs By Matt Petersen
|
DALLAS -- We arrived in the Lone Star state by way of
our Little Rock one-nighter. We found it to be nice
and warm out here, more tee-shirt weather. We’re
getting back to the West coast.
On the dockett was the very same Dallas Stars who we
saw completely dismantle Jagr and the Capitals a few
weeks earlier. For sure we’d see another big win
against the ever-struggling Rangers. But good thing
for Joe (Rangers are his team), 19-year old goalie Dan
Blackburn and pals followed up a 7-4 loss the night
before, to come from behind and work a point at the
American Airlines arena.
Oh by the way, Dallas plays in the finest building in
the NHL. Supposedly it is the house that (Dallas
Mavericks owner) Mark Cuban built, the building has so
much character and warmth, we were completely blown
away. The only downside was that our seats in the
upper deck were a little obstructed with a glass
guarder for the ramp leading up to the seats. But
everything else was cherry, with tons of food stands
and bathroom stauls, open concession viewing areas to
see the game while your walking to your seat, and the
greatest architecture of any building we’ve seen.
Great place here.
We were also glad that a free bus service takes fans
to the game from around the downtown area, and that’s
how it seemed most folks get to the game. Very
enjoyable time all the way around.
The next day we had a much needed day off from
traveling so we used our time to sleep in a little and
also check out the sites by our West End hotel room.
We were surprised to find Dealey Plaza (the site where
Kennedy was shot) just a few blocks away. We didn’t
mind being shameless tourists for a day. Later we ate
at a Southwestern joint where the Mavericks were on
about 100 TV screens. We talked to a couple locals at
the bar who said that even though the Stars are a top
notch club, they won’t ever come close to up-seating
basketball, football and baseball in this town.
We weren’t sure about that assessment. Even though it
doesn’t seem so much like your average hockey town,
this place has been quickly thrust into hockey town
status with the help of Mike Modano. He’s the man
here, and just about everyone in the arena the night
before had his number nine on their backs. Troy Aikman
who?
Next stop Colorado to see our good buddy Dewey...
